The color red is first introduced in chapter three when Asher and Jonas are throwing an apple. Jonas notices that the apple changes in midair. Jonas does understand that he is seeing color.
Jonas next sees the color red after he has been given his assignment. He looks out on the crowd and sees the red tones in the audiences faces.
In chapter twelve the Giver tells Jonas about color. Jonas connects color to choices and is outraged at the fact that color was taken away. This is the first time the connection of color and choices is made.
Textual Evidence:
"But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had--well, this was the part that he couldn't adequately understand--the apple had changed." ( Pg. 25)
"Once, back in the time of the memories, everything had a shape and size, the way things still do, but they also had a quality called color" (pg. 93)
."Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness. Before my time, before the previous time, back and back and back. We relinquished color when we relinquished sunshine and did away with difference. We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others." (Pg. 94)
