In The Giver, there are a myriad of symbols used by the author to convey to the reader how the community works. However, one of the most prominent is the symbol of color, or the lack thereof. The fact that the Giver and Jonas are the only members of the community that can see it tells the reader that other members of the community are sorely lacking elements like diversity, beauty, and the enjoyment of small details. The color Red is even more significant, as it is the color that Jonas first sees. It is also a color of hope; the little red sleigh in The Giver's memory is red, as is the sleigh in Jonas' moment of liberation from the community in the final scenes of the book. In conclusion, the color red is a symbol that is, at first, a color of choice and true life and later, of hope.
