- The Giver (1993) is the first of a four book series by Lois Lowry. It is a futuristic dystopian novel that explores the topics of control and individualism in society. It tells the story of Jonas, a boy who, in the annual ritual that establishes roles in his society, is selected to become the next Receiver of Memory. Once he receives generations of his peoples memories, he discovers that the past was strikingly different, there was war and dissent, but also emotions, individual decisions, a sense of beauty; and all of these new experiences were embodied in the discovery of color. For this website we have decided to analyze the symbolism of Jonas' first encounter wit color, the intense and vivacious red. Below is a trailer of the movie that was later made.
